How it works

A free hair type analyzer made for mixed curls

The Just So Curly Hair Analyzer is a free AI hair type detector and curl analyzer for wavy, curly and coily hair, including mixed textures on one head. Instead of matching you to a chart, it reads your curls from three photos and gives you a Curl Signature, a wash-day routine and the product that fits.

Photo 1: your shape
Hair down and natural, taken from a step back. This reads your Form: the shape of your curl pattern, from loose waves to tight coils.
Photo 2: a close-up of your strands
Hold a small section close to the camera. This reads your Fiber: how thick a single strand is.
Photo 3: your part
Make a clean part down the middle. This reads your Mass: how full your curls are at the root.
Then two quick questions
A photo can't show porosity, how well your hair holds moisture, so we ask how fast your hair dries and how it takes product. Your answers add it to your Curl Signature.
Your photos aren't stored. They're processed in real time to read your curls, then discarded. We never sell your details, and getting your results by email is optional. The whole scan takes about a minute on your phone, with no download and no account. Read our Privacy Policy
Your Curl Signature

What your Curl Signature means

Your Curl Signature is three letters, one for each photo, plus your porosity. A signature like C–R–D means Coiled, Coarse and Dense.

Form: the shape
Wavy (W), Spiraled (S), Coiled (C) or Zigzag (Z), from loosest to tightest. Tighter patterns tend to dry out faster and tangle more, so they get more moisture and slip.
Fiber: the strand
Fine (F), Medium (M) or Coarse (R). Coarse is written R so it's never mixed up with Coiled. Fine strands want a light touch; coarse strands drink up product.
Mass: the density
Sparse (S), Balanced (B) or Dense (D), read from how much scalp shows along your part. Denser hair needs more sections on wash day so product reaches every strand.
Porosity: the moisture
Low, Medium or High, from your two answers. High porosity soaks up water fast and loses it just as fast; low porosity lets product sit on top.
These are estimates, not lab measurements. The Curl Signature is our own framework, grounded in real hair science: curl pattern, strand thickness, density and porosity are all real properties of hair. When the light makes a letter hard to read, we mark it with a ~ instead of guessing. See exactly how the Curl Signature works
Hair Analyzer FAQ

Questions curly families ask

Is the Hair Analyzer really free?
Yes. It's 100% free, with no download, no account and nothing to buy. If you'd like your Curl Signature and routine emailed to you, you can add your email, but that's optional too.
Which hair types does it work for?
It's made for wavy, curly and coily hair, from loose waves to tight zigzag coils, and especially for mixed and multi-textured curls, where the pattern changes from one part of the head to another. It isn't designed for straight hair.
How accurate is the AI hair analysis?
Think of it as an experienced stylist's eye, not a lab test. Curl shape is the easiest thing to read from a photo, so Form is the most confident letter. Strand thickness and density are harder to read, and porosity comes from your own answers. If a letter looks wrong, tap “Not quite right?” on your results to change it. Soft, even light and no flash give the best read.
Can I use it for my kids?
Yes. Choose “My child's hair” and take the photos yourself. The Curl Signature works the same way for kids and adults, so curly parents can use it for the whole family. You confirm you're the parent or guardian, and the photos are never stored.
Why a Curl Signature instead of a hair type chart?
A classic hair type chart gives your whole head one code, but mixed-texture curls rarely fit one code, since the pattern can change from crown to nape. The Curl Signature reads shape, strand and density separately, so your routine fits the hair you actually have. Your results still show your closest match on the classic chart, for reference.
